Security through Peace: the urgent need to strengthen diplomacy

There is a globalised imperative towards building security through the prevention of violent conflicts, and recognition that positive peace is achieved through political rather than military means. We know that the role of diplomacy in reducing the intensity of conflict and supporting solutions to build peace is vital – so how and why are our current diplomatic frameworks falling short?

Held as part of Social Sciences Week 2020, this panel featuring some of Australia’s most eminent social scientists and experts in international relations will address the current state of global diplomacy, and its role in conflict prevention.

John Langmore will be joined by Gareth Evans and moderator Erika Feller for a Social Sciences-centred discussion of possible solutions to current obstacles to peacebuilding, and to examine the role of diplomacy in building the effectiveness of international dialogue.
