The Village Resists! A film by David Dhert

Join The University of Newcastle for a screening of David Dhert’s film The Village Resists and a conversation with David and members of the Rio Indigenous community about what happened to the multi-ethnic urban Indigenous community of Aldeia Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as they faced increased pressure ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games. The Indigenous group lives next to the sport stadium that staged the finals of both sport events. The land on which they live has been an Indigenous meeting place since the early 20th century, however the Indigenous group’s desire to protect their land and maintain it as a meeting place did not correspond with the plans of the Brazilian authorities and the corporations coming with the sport events. From within the Indigenous settlement, the film explores how the arrival of the  events was experienced and how the community resisted.
