John has worked in the Australian parliament: as a political science fellow in the Parliamentary Library 1980-1982, as a researcher on the Public Accounts Committee in 1982, and as a Senate committee secretary from 1983 to 1989 – with a year as director of studies for the former Public Service Board in 1984.
John has taught political theory and Australian politics at the ANU since 1990. He initiated and directed the ANU Parliamentary Studies Centre and more recently the Centre for the Study of Australian Politics. He has taught extensively at postgraduate level on the ANU masters of public policy and public administration programs, and at the undergraduate and Honours level courses on Australian politics and political theory.
His recent publications include the books Performing Political Theory (Palgrave 2018) and Leadership Performance and Rhetoric (Palgrave 2017).
