Academy Fellow

Professor John Nieuwenhuysen AM is an Honorary Fellow, Monash University and Member of the Board, Australian Multicultural Foundation. He was formerly Visiting Professor, King's College, London; Honorary Professorial Fellow at the Asia Institute, University of Melbourne; Director of the Monash Institute for the Study of Global Movements; Chair of the Board VITS Language Link; Deputy Chancellor RMIT University; Member ARC Expert Advisory Committee on the Behavioural, Social and Economic Sciences: Visiting Professor, University of Wollongong; Professorial Associate, University of Melbourne; ; and Panel Member AUQA.

John was formerly Chief Executive of the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) from Jan 1996-June 2002; Foundation Director of the Commonwealth Government's Bureau of Immigration, Multicultural and Population Research, 1989-1995, and Reader in Economics, University of Melbourne, 1964-1989, from where he was seconded in the 1980's to Chair two major State Enquiries (Victoria's Revenue Raising [1983] and the Liquor Control Act [1986]). In 2004 and 2006, John chaired two further Victorian State Government Enquiries, the first on A Multicultutral Act for Victoria; and the second on Hardship Accounts in the Electricity Industry.

In 2003, John was awarded an AM on the Queen's Birthday for services to independant research on immigration, multicultural, equity, indigenous, taxation, labour and industry issues, and to reform of Victoria's liquor laws.
