Profile

Professor Cameron Stewart is an internationally recognised scholar of health law and ethics. His research is focused on the interaction of normative systems, such as law, ethics and professional regulation, and their impact on the practice of health care.

Stewart’s work has had significant impact of the field of consent to healthcare decision-making and the regulatory systems that enable decisions to be made, especially when those systems interact with vulnerable populations including children, people living with cognitive decline, and people living with disabilities. Stewart also has expertise in the regulation of emerging modalities of care (for example, end-of-life decisions, voluntary assisted dying (VAD), cord blood, biobanking, genomics, artificial intelligence and autologous stem cell interventions).

Stewart’s research has been referred to in decisions of the High Court of Australia, the Supreme Court of Canada and the Full Court of Appeals of South Africa, the NSW Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court of New South Wales and the Federal Family and Circuit Court of Australia.

Stewart has also had a major impact on policies in Australia and internationally concerned with consent to treatment, advance care planning, end-of-life care, autologous stem cell interventions and voluntary assisted dying.
