Profile
I completed an honours degree in the history and philosophy of science (HPS/STS) before studying law (LLB) at the University of Sydney and taking a PhD in law from the University of Cambridge in 2001. Since 2002 I have been a full time academic, and since 2009 full professor, in the Faculty of Law at the University of New South Wales, where I direct the Program in Expertise, Evidence and Law. Between 2012 and 2024 I was simultaneously a Research Professor (fractional) at the Northumbria Law School (Newcastle, UK). I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of New South Wales, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law, a member of the Forensic Evidence Working Group of the Supreme Court of Victoria, and until recently was a longstanding member (and Vice-President) of the Council of the Australian Academy of Forensic Sciences, Standards Australia’s forensic science committee, and legal editor for the Australian Journal of Forensic Sciences. In 2007-2008 I served as an international adviser to the Goudge Inquiry into Pediatric Forensic Pathology in Ontario (2007-2008) and am foundation Chair of the multi-disciplinary Evidence-based forensics initiative (EBFI).
Basically, I am an evidence scholar with a broad interest in evidence and proof. My primary research is focused on the relations between law and science, especially the forensic sciences and their use in criminal proceedings. This interest includes the historical emergence and reception of forensic sciences as well as the roles of forensic sciences in modern investigations, prosecutions and appeals. My research is interdisciplinary, often in collaboration with scientists, seeking to understand and assess the effectiveness of legal rules, procedures and personnel in the regulation and evaluation of scientific, technical and biomedical knowledges. Some of this work considers the role of expert evidence in wrongful and questionable convictions. My work is also comparative. I have published extensively beyond Australia, on expertise and expert evidence in the UK, the US, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa.
