The Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia expresses its deepest condolences following the horrific terrorist attack on the Australian Jewish community attending the Chanukah by the Sea event at Bondi Beach in Sydney. We mourn the lives lost and stand in solidarity with Fellows and all others who have been affected by this senseless act of violence.
Such attacks are abhorrent to Australia’s shared values of peace, inclusion, and respect for human dignity. At this time of grief, we extend our compassion to the victims, their families, and the wider community. The Academy reaffirms its commitment to working with our Fellows and drawing on the insights and expertise of the social sciences to foster understanding, tolerance and resilience in the face of hatred.
