The Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia is proud to announce that its Geography education resource Water in the World has won the Not-for-profit Generated Resource category at the 2024 Australian Geography Teachers Association (AGTA) Awards. The awards, held during the 2024 AGTA conference in Darwin on 3 October, recognise outstanding achievements in the creation of educational materials that enrich Geography teaching and learning across Australia.
Water in the World is designed for Year 7 students and teachers, addressing the critical issue of water management in Australia. This peer-reviewed resource emphasises the importance of understanding water’s value and the need for sustainable responses to the challenges related to water access and usage.
Nominees were assessed according to a range of criteria including currency, authenticity, application of contemporary understandings about how students learn, use of cutting-edge production, and innovative style. AGTA praised the resource for its comprehensive curriculum materials, exceptional graphics, and wide array of linked resources, making it a standout tool for geography education.
‘This recognition is a testament to the collaborative efforts of research experts, dedicated teachers, and the creative team behind Water in the World,’ said Academy Education Director Cindy Bin Tahal.
‘Together, our team has created a resource that empowers students as agents of change through Geography teaching and learning across Australia. This award reflects The Academy’s ongoing commitment to supporting high-quality education in the social sciences and its ability to contribute to the development of key learning resources for Australian schools.’
AGTA is respected as the peak body for Geography education across Australia. This award is received with appreciation for the acknowledgment for the value of Seriously Social and Water in the World for classrooms nationwide.
