Director, International Consortium for Research in Employment & Work (iCREW), Centre for Global Business, Monash Business School. Also Professor, Department of Management, Faculty of Business & Economics, Monash University. (He was formerly Director of Research and subsequently Discipline Group Leader: Human Resources & Employment Relations there.) He also is in the Monash Business Digitalisation Research Network; Monash Data Futures Institute, and Monash Asia Institute. He is Co-Convenor, Victorian Branch, Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.

His international research collaborations include being co-leader of research projects on such industries as aviation and transport, building, manufacturing, healthcare, hospitality, the public sector, telecommunications, education and universities. His research interests include: employment relations, people management, organisational/technological change, high-performance work systems or 'smart workplaces', lean management, outsourcing, shared services, arbitration, dispute prevention and settlement, mediation and negotiation; international comparisons and the international transferability of management styles and employment relations arrangements.

He enjoys supervising and working with PhD students, especially if they are focussing on any similar fields to those in which he researches. His teaching includes qualitative and mixed research methods for PhD students.

He has published numerous book chapters and books. His publications have been widely cited and have been translated into other languages, including Chinese, French, Japanese Korean and Spanish.

He was educated at the University of Manchester; London School of Economics; and Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. He worked on research projects based at Oxford and at Warwick universities, and at Imperial College, London. He was subsequently an academic at Durham University, UK, then at Queensland University, Queensland University of Technology (Director, ARC Key Centre in Strategic Management), and Griffith University (Dean/Director, Graduate School of Management).

He has served as an arbitrator for the British Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS), and is a former president of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management (ANZAM), the International Federation of Scholarly Associations of Management, the Association of Industrial Relations Academics of Australian & New Zealand (AIRAANZ) and of the Industrial Relations Society Victoria (IRSV). He is co-chair of the International Section, US Labor and Employment Relations Association (LERA) and President, Australian Labour and Employment Relations Association (ALERA).

He has served on the editorial board of more than twenty refereed journals, and is an assessor for the Australian Research Council (ARC) and the equivalent research councils in the UK, the USA, Canada and China. He has been a co-chief investigator on many competitive grant-funded projects.

He advises international organisations, private- and public-sector enterprises and international agencies. He has also been an advisor for governments in Australia and the UK. Also, he has served as a non-executive director on boards e.g. in the fields of education, health and sport.

He has been an Examiner, Guest Speaker or Reviewer for universities and enterprises in Australia, Canada, UK, USA and other countries in Africa, Asia and Europe. He is a Visiting Professor, Newcastle University, UK and Nottingham Trent University , UK . He has also been invited to be a visitor and/or associate at several other universities including: Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA; Cardiff University, Wales; the University of Melbourne and the University of New South Wales; as well as at universities in other countries.

He initiated and co-convenes the annual Symposium that is held jointly by Monash and Melbourne universities in honour of the Academy's former president, the late the Honourable Emeritus Professor Joe Isaac AO, FASSA ( and the Prescott Family Foundation lectures ( He also comments in the mass media, for example, see The Conversation (
