The Australian Government, through the Australian Research Council and the Department of Education and Training is assessing how universities are translating their research into economic, social and other benefits and how to incentivize greater collaboration between universities, industry and other end-users of research. This Engagement and Impact Assessment is being piloted in 2017 to test and refine the methodology in preparation for the first full engagement and impact assessment in 2018.

But how does one system measure the impact of scientific discoveries and social science innovations and how can we ensure that social science research if accurately recognized in the future?

At this forum four eminent scholars will discuss how social science researchers in Australia already have a major impact on the everyday life of Australian citizens and the ways in which our unique research can be measured and assessed. Drawing on examples from the recently published The Social Sciences Shape the Nation, their international experiences and many years of distinguished research, the panellists will provide deep insights into the power of the social sciences.
