Professor Bryan S. Turner was professor of sociology at Cambridge University (1998-2004) and at the National University of Singapore (2005-2008). From 2009 he is simultaneously the Alona Evans Distinguished Visiting Professor of Sociology at Wellesley College Boston and Professor of Social and Political Thought at the University of Western Sydney. He is currently the Presidential Professor of Sociology, The Graduate Center, CUNY, USA (2010-) and the Professor of Sociology of Religion at the Australian Catholic University, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia (2013-)

He is the founding editor of the journals Citizenship Studies and the Journal of Classical Sociology.

His research interests are

  • the sociology of citizenship and human rights
  • the sociology of religion (with special reference to Islam)
  • the sociology of ageing and generations
  • politics and secularism
