Prior to his retirement Professor Darrell Tryon was Professor of Linguistics and Deputy Director of the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies at the Australian National University. He was interested in descriptive, typological and historical linguistics, with particular reference to the Austronesian languages of the Asia-Pacific region. Another major interest was sociolinguistics, particularly language contact and change, language and society and the pidgin and creole languages of the Pacific. Professor Tryon was also involved in a number of international language endangerment projects.
