Professor Diane E Kirby is an Emeritus Professor in History at La Trobe University, Melbourne. Dr Kirkby specialises in women's working history in Australia and the USA, especially as it intersects with law and feminism. She has also written extensively on the history of Australian drinking culture and pubs, arising from her study of pubs as women's workplaces. She is currently extending her social and cultural approach to labour history through an exploration of Australia's seafarers.

She has served on the Executive of the Australian Historical Association, the Australian-American Fulbright Selection Committee, is a past President of the Australia-New Zealand Law and History Society and a current member of the New Zealand Tertiary Education Committee, Performance Based Research Fund, Humanities and Law Panel.
