Professor Ian Freckelton QC is a Professorial Fellow of Law and Psychiatry at the University of Melbourne and a Queen's Counsel at the Victorian Bar with a national practice. He is also a Judge of the Supreme Court of Nauru, an Adjunct Professor of Law and Forensic Medicine at Monash University, an Adjunct Professor in the Australian Centre for Health Law Research, Faculty of Law, Queensland University of Technology, Adjunct Professor of Law at Trobe University, and an Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences at the Auckland University of Technology, a member of Victoria's Coronial Council and a member of the Mental Health Tribunal of Victoria. He was a part-time Commissioner of the Victorian Law Reform Commission, heading its reference on Medicinal Cannabis, and in 2017 was appointed to the Australian Advisory Council on the Medicial Use of Cannabis. He is the Principal Examiner for Specialisation in Criminal Law for the Law Institute of Victoria. He has previously been a member of the Social Security Appeals Tribunal, and Victoria's Medical Practitioners Board, Psychologists Registration Board and Disciplinary Appeals Board, as well as a President of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Psychiatry, Psychology and Law.
Professor Freckelton is the Editor of the Journal of Law and Medicine and the Editor-in-Chief of Psychiatry, Psychology and Law. He is an elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law and of the Australasian College of Legal Medicine (Honorary). Professor Freckelton is the author and editor of books on expert evidence, causation, scholarly misconduct, disciplinary law, mental health law, criminal injuries compensation, law and medicine, criminal law, sentencing, policing, and administrative law and over five hundred peer reviewed articles on a wide variety of subjects, many of them about the interface between law, medicine, psychology and science.
His most recent books are Expert Evidence: Law, Practice, Procedure and Advocacy (6th end, Thomas Reuters, 2019),Tensions and Traumas in Health Law (with Kerry Petersen) (Federation Press, 2017), Expert Evidence and Criminal Jury Trials (OUP, 2016) (with Jane Goodman-Delahunty, Jacqueline Horan and Blake McKimmie), Scholarly Misconduct: Law, Regulation and Practice (OUP, 2016), and Indictable Offences in Victoria (6th edn, Thomson, 2015) (with Kerryn Cockroft). He is currently completing the 2nd edition of Death Investigation and the Coroner's Inquest (with David Ranson) and a book on regulation of health practitioners with Belinda Bennett. He has commenced work on a book on Quackery and the Law.
