Sir Ninian Stephen was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria in 1970 and served until 1972 before being appointed to the High Court of Australia, where he served from 1972 to 1982. Sir Ninian served as the 20th Governor-General of Australia from 1982 to 1989.
