Professor Peter Shergold AC, has been the Chancellor of the Western Sydney University since January 2011. In addition, he is a Senior Visiting Fellow of the Singapore Civil Service College, a Fellow of the Australia and New Zealand School of Government (FANZSG), a Fellow of the Institute of Public Administration Australia (FIPAA), a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (FAICD) and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management (FAIM). He is Chair of the National Centre for Vocational Education Research and of the Higher Education Standards Panel.

Profesor Shergold was formerly Secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet taking the position of Australia's most senior public administrator for five years. He also established the Office of Multicultural Affairs and, for a period of time, headed the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC). He went on to become the Australian Public Service Commissioner; Secretary of the Department of Employment, Workplace Relations and Small Business; and Secretary of the Department of Education, Science and Training.

With a history as an economic historian he had previously headed the Department of Economic History at UNSW and taught at a number of universities including the London School of Economics and Pennsylvania State University.

Professor Shergold is now Coordinator General for Refugee Resettlement in NSW. He also has an active role as a non-executive director. He joined the Board of AMP in May 2008. He is also chair of Opal Aged Care and external director of Corrs Chambers Westgarth. He is the former chair and now director of a venture capital start-up, QuintessenceLabs, which is working on quantum cryptography. He is actively involved in the non- profit sector and was Chair of the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation. He is a member of the State Library Council of NSW.
