ROBIN JEFFREY is former Dean of the College of Asia and the Pacific at the Australian National University. Previously he was Professor of Politics at La Trobe University, Melbourne. His special interest is India and South Asia, particularly the regions of Punjab and Kerala and the politics of media, development and pluralism. He is also interested in the study of Asia in Australia and was the coordinator of the report, Maximizing Australia's Asia Knowledge, published in 2002. He was president of the Asian Studies Association of Australia 2003-04. He is working on a book called Slices of India, which examines India in the second half of the twentieth century by focusing on six slice years - 1942, 1954, 1966, 1977, 1989 and 2001, the years of the great Kumbh Mela at the confluence of the Jamuna and Ganga rivers at the city of Allahabad.
