Professor Russell Lansbury was Professor of Industrial Relations (1987-2009) and Associate Dean for Research in the Business School (2000-07) at the University of Sydney. He was the Foundation Director of the Australian Centre for Industrial Relations Research and Teaching (an ARC Key Centre) at the University of Sydney. He was appointed Emeritus Professor at the Unversity of Sydney in 2009. He is an Adjunct Professor at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University and an Honorary Professor at the Open University of Hong Kong.
He gained an Master of Arts in Political Science and a Diploma of Education from the University of Melbourne and a PhD from the London School of Economics in the UK. He has been awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters (DLitt) by Macquarie University and an Honorary Doctor of Technology (DTech) by Lulea Technical University in Sweden. He undertook graduate studies in Sociology at the University of Lund in Sweden and was awarded a Danish government research fellowship at the University of Copenhagen.
His major research contributions have been in the areas of international and comparative employment and industrial relations. His current research includes studies of the effects of management strategies of multinational enterprises on employment relations and labour practices. He was a Senior Fulbright Scholar at Harvard University and the Sloan School of Management at MIT in Boston, USA. He has been a Shaw Foundation Professor at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and received fellowships from the French, German, Danish, Finnish and Swedish goverments.. He has held visiting positions at the National Institute for Worklife Research in Sweden, the International Institute for Business Administration (INSEAD) in France and the Industrial Relations Research Institute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the USA.
Joint editor of the Journal of Industrial Relations from 1999-2009, he has served on the boards of leading academic journals in North America, Europe, and Asia. He has been an adviser to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). From 2006-2009 he was President of the International Labour and Employment Relations Association (ILERA), which is based at the ILO in Geneva, Switzerland..
